prior to 1780 these men wore crocked hats (see series 41) Fur crested helmets were patterned after Lafayette's Corps of Light Infantry

As the war began Washington recommended soldiers of the frontier be clothed in fringed linen or deerskin hunting shirts. Some troops dyed their summer linen shirt a distinguishing color.
